The Irish scored six runs in their first at-bat en route to a 9-0 victory.

Maple Lake sophomore catcher Ben Clapp hit a two-run triple to spark a six-run first inning en route to a 9-0 victory over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday in the Class 2A quarterfinals at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.

Clapp said he had been feeling out the pitches and went for an 0-2 change-up when he hit the triple. He drove in two more runs in the fourth.

“He’s been batting third since freshman year. That’s Clapp right there,” Irish coach Brooks Marquardt said of his performance.

The second-seeded Irish (23-2) got five hits in their big first inning and rolled from there. The Rebels (22-3) had four hits and committed four errors.

“We just didn’t play good defense coming out of the chute,” Rebels coach Bill Ibach said.

Maple Lake junior pitcher Mitch Hoistad earned the victory, getting two strikeouts in two innings. Seniors Grant Mergen and Cole Trager also split time on the mound.
