Providence Academy's Tapani turns in a gem

CLASS 1A, SECTION 4 PLAYOFFS

Providence Academy 3, Mounds Park Academy 0: The Lions got a one-hit shutout from sophomore pitcher Ryan Tapani, who struck out 10 to earn Providence a victory in the quarterfinals. Tapani — the son of former Twins pitcher Kevin Tapani — outdueled Panthers senior Keith Wood, who took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth before surrendering three runs. Senior Nick Krueger drove in the first Lions run with an RBI single.

CLASS 3A, SECTION 4 PLAYOFFS

Cretin-Derham Hall 9, Tartan 4: Junior Tim McClanahan hit a two-run homer in the second inning to spark the Raiders offense as they beat the Titans in the quarterfinals at Midway Stadium. Senior Bob Kinne was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, pairing with McClanahan to give winning pitcher Dan Kettler plenty of run support.
