Rebels 7, Pirates 3, in well-played game

The day was beautiful and the baseball was well-played. Thank you to Austin Becker, Shawn Clarke, Matt Hanson, Caleb Selin and Jake Velander, for their hard work this year - and throughout their careers. The five seniors ended their 2011 regular season with one final home game at Park Center. The Park Center Baseball program would also like to thank all the parents and the entire Dugout Club for the great celebration and BBQ last night, as well.

The game itself was hard-fought, with Champlin Park scoring a single run in the first on a walk and a double. The Pirates responded in the second with a run of their own on a single by Matt Hanson and an RBI double by Jake Schultz. The Rebels then scored three runs in the top of the third on two doubles, a single and a walk. Austin Becker held CP in check for the most part on the day, giving up only those four earned runs and generating twelve ground-ball outs in his six and one-thirds innings of work.

Park Center stung the ball well most of the night and rallied for two two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth on an Austin Ledin 2-rbi single. With the gap closed to 4-3, though, the Rebels held their own rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three unearned runs, and spreading the divide to four runs. At 7-3, the Pirates could not pull off a seventh-inning comeback and were left with their 19th loss on the year.

Ledin had two hits on the day, while Becker, Hanson, Schultz and Selin rounding out the hit totals for the day, with one each. Both Selin and Schultz doubled on the day, while Ledin (catcher) threw out the only Rebel attempting to steal on the day, and Becker (pitcher) picked a runner off of first. The Pirates also committed only one error on the day, making it the fourth consecutive game of one error or less (a total of two errors over the last four games).
