Bison scratch out win against Cambridge-Isanti 6-5

Conventional baseball wisdom tells us that when facing a conference rival who is tied for first place with you, you start someone with experience.

Coach Beilke’s Buffalo Bison decided to buck that trend.

Sophomore starting pitcher Jason Senger pitched six strong innings before being pulled in the seventh. The Bison called upon another sophomore, Brennan Gilyard, to slam the door shut in the seventh inning for the save and a 6-5 win over Cambridge-Isanti.

“We have been very happy with our young pitching lately” Beilke said. “This whole last week we’ve been able to hit the ball very well, which takes a lot of pressure off of the pitching and defense.”

Buffalo scored what was the deciding run in the fifth inning.

After a single by Gilyard, junior Nick Mattson dropped down his second perfect sacrifice bunt of the game to move the runner into scoring position. Catcher Colton Haight would later drive in Gilyard on a hard hit single.

Cambridge-Isanti would get the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on second in the seventh inning before the Bison closer coaxed a soft pop fly to the first baseman to end the game.

With the win, Buffalo moved into sole position of first place in the Mississippi 8 conference.

The Bison have a busy week, with five games in five days. Buffalo travels to Monticello on Tuesday.

Cambridge-Isanti’s next game is Monday against St. Michael Albertville. The Bluejackets beat STMA earlier this season by a score of 7-3.
