Tornadoes get out of slump with 12-3 win over Elk River

In baseball, sometimes all it takes to get out of a slump is one big inning.

After being outscored 67-13 in their first eight games of the season, the Anoka Tornadoes were due for some offense.

After the first two and one half innings went by relatively quickly Friday evening against Elk River, it was time for the Tornado bats to wake up.

Catcher Brandon Stopka started the inning with a single to left that was just out of the reach of two infielders. Two walks, singles and doubles later, Anoka was on top 6-0.

Elk River answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and chased starting pitcher Kevin Persuitti from the game. Anoka then called upon right-handed reliever Ryan Rumpka to get out of the inning.

It was lights out for the Elk bats for the rest of the game.

Rumpka retired the first eight batters he faced and finished the game with a walk as the only blemish on his stat line.

After adding another four runs in the fourth inning, the Tornadoes added two insurance runs in the sixth off a two-run home run by second basemen Kevin Pribl. The Tornadoes rolled to a 12-3 victory over the Elks.

With the win, Anoka improves to 1-8 on the season. The Tornadoes have their work cut out for them, facing No. 2 ranked Maple Grove.

Elk River hosts Osseo on Monday. The two teams met in the season opener and the Elks prevailed in that matchup 9-8.
