First Report

St. Michael Albertville sealed Thursday night’s victory with five runs in the sixth inning, silencing Maple Grove in a 9-0 shutout at Maple Grove High School.

The Knights (19-1, 7-1) now hover over the state with one of the best regular-season records, sitting only under St. Cloud Tech (20-0) and Waconia (19-0). The Knights, who are ranked fifth in the Class 4A Minnesota coaches’ poll, solidified their ranking by easily handling no.14-ranked Maple Grove (13-7, 9-4).

Senior Travis Brown pitched a complete game for the Knights, giving up four hits and striking out three. Senior Jack Kelly smacked two doubles and sent two runners home, and freshman Luc Laylin hit a triple and contributed an RBI. Nine different Knights made it to base, with 12 hits and five walks against the Crimson’s four-pitcher rotation.

Maple Grove junior Jerome Gooley hit three singles, and senior Josh Tyler added a single.

STMA has won seven games in a row, but coach Paul Schumm looks forward to the Section 8 postseason and said his team isn’t thinking about its near-perfect record.
