Burnsville and Prior Lake have an outstanding rivalry on the baseball diamond

Burnsville and Prior Lake have an outstanding rivalry on the baseball diamond. It’s natural, as the South Suburban Conference school districts reside next to each other.

The last four outcomes have all been one-run victories by Burnsville. The latest was a 3-2 triumph when senior Noah Robb scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

The Blaze won all three meetings a year ago, the last 5-4 in the Class 3A, Section 3 tournament. They won the regular-season matchups 5-4 and 4-3.

The opening game this season pitted Division I pitching aces: Burnsville’s Sam Carlson, who has committed to Florida, and Prior Lake’s Nick Hanson, a Kentucky recruit. They combined for 19 strikeouts.

New coach in the mix

Northfield has offered its vacant wrestling coaching position to assistant coach Geoff Staab, according to Raiders activities director Tom Graupmann. The move is awaiting school board approval.

Staab, a math teacher at the school, served as assistant coach under Mark Woitalla, who resigned after 16 seasons leading the program.

Top performances

• Apple Valley senior Kieran McKeag, back from a knee injury suffered during the football season, won the boys’ shot put with a toss of 56 feet, 10 inches in the Hamline Elite Meet. He previously had won the shot put and discus in the Eagan Invitational. He won the shot put with a throw of 54-6½ and the discus with a toss of 161-10. McKeag is the Class 2A defending state champion in the shot put.

• Sophomore pitcher Teddy Tauer threw a two-hit shutout, leading Red Wing to a 10-0 victory over Faribault in a Big 9 Conference baseball matchup. Tauer, who struck out seven and walked two, is 2-0 with one save and a 0.44 ERA this season. Tauer also went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
