Melmquist, Bliss, finish what offense started.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. — Riley Simonetti’s RBI double in the fifth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and Mitch Melmquist and Stephen Bliss combined to face the minimum number of batters over the final three innings as Benilde-St. Margaret’s defeated St. Louis Park, 4-3.

Matt Brooks drove in two runs and scored another to give BSM a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

The teams traded three-run innings as the Red Knights scored three times in the bottom of the first when Matt Brooks doubled home a pair of runs and scored on Derek Drees’ base hit.

After Andrew Henstein drove in a run with a two-out hit in the third for the Orioles, two runs scored when Kenny Furilli’s fly ball was misplayed in right field.

After posting the three-run third, St. Louis Park loaded the bases with one out in the fourth but John Vecere got out of the jam with a foul out and a fly out before turning the ball over to Melmquist.

In the fifth, Melmquist issued a one-out walk to Oriole ninth hitter Kyle Nordstrom but induced Joey Jaramillo into an inning-ending double play before working a 1-2-3 sixth inning against the Orioles’ 2-4 hitters.

With a one run lead in the top of the seventh, Bliss took over on the mound, making his team-leading 10th appearance of the season and it was one of his best outings. He struck out the first batter he faced and got a ground out and fly out to end the game.

Simonetti and Crane each had two hits to lead the BSM offense, which outhit St. Louis Park, 7-4.

Melmquist, who walked one and struck out one in two innings, picked up his second win of the season while Bliss earned his second save of the season.

The Red Knights will be in action again, Saturday, when they play host to St. Thomas Academy in a 12:30 p.m. game at BSM Field.
