Red Knights moved to 2-0 in MWC with win over Cooper.

NEW HOPE/FRIDLEY, Minn. — Benilde-St. Margaret’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead at Robbinsdale Cooper but had to hang on at the end for an 8-7 Metro West Conference win before dropping a 6-3 non-conference decision at Totino-Grace.

After being rained out, Thursday, in their scheduled game against Cooper, the Red Knights and Hawks moved the game to 11 a.m. Saturday with the scheduled game versus Totino-Grace moved back from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

BSM got to Cooper starter Nate Lutmer early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning when Jamison Schuh worked a one-out walk and Riley Simonetti followed with a base hit. After Tyler Wyvell reached on a fielder’s choice, Matthew Brooks and Derek Drees followed with RBI singles.

The Red Knights tacked on another run in the second when Alex Houlihan led off with a single, moved to second on Riley Crane’s sacrifice bunt and came around to give the guests a 3-0 lead when Simonetti reach on a fielder’s choice.

A two-run fourth inning got the Hawks back to within one run of the lead but a four-run fifth inning expanded the Red Knigths’ lead to 7-2.

After Stephen Bliss had gotten BSM out of trouble in the fourth inning, Cooper roughed him up for four runs to close to within one run again but the Red Knights were undeterred, adding an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

Mitch Melmquist came on to pitch a scoreless sixth inning before turning the ball over to Wyvell for the seventh. The Red Knigth co-captain would allow an unearned run in the seventh but, with the a one-run lead and runners on second and third, Wyvell got a strikeout to end the game and earn the save and give Melmquist his first career win.

BSM had 15 hits in the game, led by a four-hit performance by Drees. Simonetti, John Vecere, Jack Qualen and Cole Jacob each added a pair of hits.

In the afternoon game versus Totino-Grace, the Eagles took advantage of eight walks in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Trebor Eberle came on with one runner on base and no outs in the third inning and did not allow a run over the next three innings to keep the Red Knights in the game and they finally came up with a three-run fifth inning, using three walks to load the bases with one out before Schuh hit a sacrifice fly to drive in one run. Dylan Hewitt followed with an RBI double and Wyvell’s single plated Crane with the third run.

Eberle appeared to be through the sixth inning without allowing a run when he got Max Meyer to hit a two-out pop fly with runs on second and third. However, the ball was dropped on the infield, allowing two runs to score, before Eberle got a groundout to end the inning.

In four innings of work, Eberle allowed the two unearned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one.

Offensively, Schuh and Wyvell had two hits apiece to account for four of BSM’s five total hits.

The Red Knights are slated to play three games at home this week, beginning with Tuesday’s Metro West Conference game versus Chanhassen, which is set for a 4:30 p.m. start time. They will follow that with another conference home game, Thursday, at 4:30 p.m., versus Bloomington Kennedy before ending the week, Saturday, with a non-conference game at 3 p.m. versus Edina.
