Anoka’s victory over Park Center on Saturday moved the Tornadoes into first place in the Northwest Suburban Conference baseball standings.

Anoka’s victory over Park Center on Saturday moved the Tornadoes into first place in the Northwest Suburban Conference baseball standings. Entering this week 7-0, Anoka is now favored to win the 10-game title chase.

To combat unbalanced scheduling in the conference, only the first round of conference games count toward the standings.

Trailing Park Center 1-0 and down to its final three outs, Anoka rallied as Jason Brumbaugh drove in two runs and scored once in a 3-1 comeback victory. Winning pitcher Alex Pribyl scattered three hits and struck out nine Pirates in 6⅓ innings of work.

Diamond notes

Mounds View junior Charlie Callahan threw a complete game no-hitter in a 1-0 victory against Park of Cottage Grove on April 25. He faced the minimum 21 batters, striking out five and walking one. Park of Cottage Grove hit only two balls out of the infield. Callahan also was 2-for-3 with a double and the game-winning RBI.

Blaine junior Zach Rustad picked up victories on the mound against Andover and Coon Rapids, pitching 13 total innings and striking out 19 batters. Against Coon Rapids, Rustad pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed only two hits. At the plate, Rustad hit .385 with five RBI.

Golf rankings

Andover’s Sierra Langlie began this week No. 8 in the Minnesota Golf Association rankings. Teammate Haley Tollette is No. 25. Andover sits No. 9 in the team rankings, one spot behind Blaine.

On the boys’ side, Spring Lake Park’s Pete Sienko holds the No. 3 spot.

Delay of big game

Cold and wet weather postponed what looked to be the deciding game for the Northwest Suburban Conference softball championship. Elk River’s game at Maple Grove, scheduled for April 30, was moved to May 15. However, Osseo topped the Elks 7-3 on Saturday and added itself to the list of title challengers. District rivals Maple Grove and Osseo play Friday.

New Irondale football coach

Irondale announced Ben Fuller has been named head football coach. Fuller has several years of coaching experience at the high school level starting in 2004.

His most recent position was offensive coordinator and assistant coach at St. Paul Highland Park.
