Five unearned runs lead to Red Knight loss.

Jimmy Cron struck out five Hopkins batters in two innings of work out of the bullpen.

Five Benilde-St. Margarets’ errors led to as many Hopkins unearned runs as the Red Knights dropped an 11-0 decision in five innings in their 2013 season opener.

Due to unplayable conditions, the game was moved to the Metrodome, where Royals’ starting pitcher Logan Athmann threw the game’s first pitch at 6:39 a.m.

The first inning opened with promise for BSM as Dan Labosky walked, stole second base and moved to third base on a Keaton Studsrud ground out. Mikey McGill drew a two-out walk to put runners on the first and third but Athmann worked out of the jam and was never seriously threatened thereafter.

Hopkins went to work in the top of the first inning, using five hits and an error to plate six runs, three of which were unearned.

Two more errors helped the Royals score four more runs in the second inning and, after needing 64 pitches to get through two innings, Red Knight starter Michael Kaminski gave way to Jimmy Cron.

Despite allowing an unearned run in the third inning, Cron got five of his six outs via strikeout, including all three in the fourth inning.

The Red Knights collected just two hits in the game. Nathan Hanks led off the third inning by lofting a single down the left field line and John Backes opened the fourth by beating out an infield single up the middle.

BSM is slated to open the home portion of its 2013 schedule Tuesday by hosting Robbinsdale Cooper in the teams’ North Suburban Conference opener, beginning at 4:15 p.m.
