Lakeville North eliminates reigning 3A champion Burnsville; Red Wing, John Marshall advance

CLASS 3A

SECTION 3: Pitching and timely hitting were the name of the game in both the losers' and winners' bracket. Defending state champion Burnsville was eliminated when junior Brandon Morgan bounced a bases-loaded single over a drawn in infield on a 3-2 pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Lakeville North a 1-0 victory over the Blaze. Junior lefthander Jordan Jacobson threw a five-hit shutout for the Panthers. Burnsville had dropped to the losers' bracket Friday night with a 9-6, nine-inning loss to Eagan.

In the winners' bracket, Eastview scored all of its runs with two outs in a 7-0 victory over Eagan. Senior Chris Narum had two hits and three RBI. Senior pitcher Evan DeCovich only allowed one hit while striking out six. ... Lakeville North will play Eagan at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville in the losers' bracket final. The winner will play Eastview for the section title Tuesday.

• SECTION 1: Minnesota baseball fans will not get the chance to see Rochester Century pitcher Mitch Brown, the hard-throwing righthander expected to go in the first two rounds of Monday's MLB draft, in the upcoming state tournament. Brown and the Panthers were eliminated from the postseason Saturday with 4-2 loss to Owatonna in a losers' bracket game. Huskies starter Dalton Homeier outdueled Brown, giving up five hits while striking out 14. Brown finished with 11 strikeouts.

Red Wing advanced to Tuesday's championship game with a 10-0, five-inning victory over Rochester John Marshall. The top-seeded Wingers took advantage of a horrific fourth inning in the field by Marshall, scoring nine unearned runs as a result of four John Marshall errors.

John Marshall bounced back and defeated Owatonna 2-1 in the losers' bracket final and will play Red Wing for the section championship Tuesday. The Rockets will need to beat the Wingers twice to win title.
