BSM senior gets win on the mound, collects game-winning hit

Marcus Barone allowed five hits over six innings and snapped a tie with a sixth-inning single as Benilde-St. Margaret's extended its winning streak to nine games with a 7-5 win at Bloomington Jefferson.

The Red Knights scored single runs in each of the final three innings to overcome a 5-4 deficit but Barone's single, driving in Joe Melles from second base, turned out to be the biggest hit as it gave BSM a 6-5 lead.

Following his game-winning hit, Barone needed just eight pitches to work a 1-2-3 sixth inning, his final of the night.

The Red Knights added an insurance run in the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Bobby Papetti led off the inning with walk. Robby Sutherland re-entered the game to run and moved to second on Keaton Studsrud's sacrifice bunt, with Dan Laobsky doubling down the left field line to drive in the game's final run.

With a two-run lead, BSM head coach Greg Hoemke turned the game over to Jimmy Heck, who got a pair of ground balls and a strikeout on 11 pitches to earn a save.

The Red Knights jumped on top early in the game when Labosky walked to open the game and, after stealing second base, scored on a base hit by Heck.

In the second inning, BSM scored three times to take a 4-0 lead. Grant Besse drove in a pair of runs with a base hit and eventually scored on Gabe MacDonald's bases-loaded walk.

The Jaguars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning, added another in the third and finally took the lead with two more runs in the fifth inning.

The Red Knights tied the game in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs. However, they could only manage one run when Tony Robinson got a glove on Sutherland's line drive towards left field, which resulted in a run-scoring fielder's play.

Barone's fourth victory of the season came after he allowed five hits, three walks and hit two batters while striking out three.

Offensively, Melles, Studsrud and John Backes each had two hits. Studsrud and Gabe MacDonald, who had a hit and two walks, both reached base in three of four plate appearances.

The Red Knights, who lead the North Suburban Conference standings by a half-game, will face second-place Totino-Grace, Friday, in a 4:15 p.m. game in Fridley.
