Besse leads 14-hit attached with three-hit performance

Grant Besse led a 14-hit attack, Spencer Shaver provided the winning margin with his first home run of the season and Scott Quinby won his fourth game of the season as Benilde-St. Margaret’s downed Fridley, 13-2, in five innings.

The win also ran the Red Knights’ winning streak to eight games, matching an eight-game winning streak they put together in 2010.

Besse’s one-out single in the first inning began a two-run rally for BSM but it was a four-run second which set the tone of the game for the Red Knights.

Keaton Studsrud and Dan Labosky drew one-out walks and, with the duo on second and third base, Besse singled in both runners. Joe Melles then singled to right field and, when the ball was misplayed in the outfield, he raced all the way to third base with pinch runner Marcus Barone scoring and Jimmy Heck followed with an RBI groundout.

Fridley managed to load the bases in its half of the second inning, using a walk, hit batter and a base hit, before Matt Neumann singled down the left field line to plate the Tigers’ only runs of the game.

Another four-run inning, this time in the fourth inning, put the game out of reach for BSM and Besse once again started the rally with a leadoff single. Melles reached on an error and Jimmy Heck followed with an RBI single. Heck would steal second base and, one out later, Bobby Papetti was intentionally walked. Andrew Murnane then singled in two runs and Robby Sutherland’s sacrifice fly plated one more run.

Three more runs in the fifth inning brought the game to a close via the 10-run rule. Sam Lynch and John Backes sandwiched singles around a foulout and Shaver, who had come on to play first base in the fourth inning, drove the first pitch he saw over the left-center field fence for his first home run of the season.

Scott Quinby picked up the win on the mound for BSM. He worked into the fourth inning, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three. John Backes made his varsity debut on the mound, working the final two innings without allowing a hit while walking three and striking out one.

The Red Knights return to action tomorrow to play their lone night game of the season when they face Bloomington Jefferson in a 7 p.m. game at Dred Scott’s Tony Olivia Field.
