Heck outduels Matthys to give Red Knights 2-1 win.

Jimmy Heck outdueled Jake Matthys over seven innings and Benilde-St. Margaret's remained unbeaten in North Suburban Conference play with a 2-1 win at Spring Lake Park.

Heck tossed a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in his last outing and was nearly as flawless, tossing a six-hitter, 11-strikeout performance at the Panthers.

However, it was the hosts who took a lead early when Alex Eatherton led off the second inning with a single. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Spencer Stachowski's sacrifice fly.

Matthys retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before Melles, who had singled in the first inning, singled again with one out in the fourth. Heck reached on an infield hit and, one out later, Grant Besse's single through the left side brought home Melles with the tying run.

The game was decided in the seventh inning when Besse led off the inning with a walk and he moved to second on Bobby Papetti's sacrifice bunt. Jack McGinn then lined a shot up the middle which Matthys got a glove on to prevent Besse from scoring but McGinn reached on an infield hit.

Keaton Studsrud then hit a groundball to shortstop which forced out McGinn at second base. However, Studsrud beat the relay throw to first base and Besse crossed the plate with the go-ahead run.

Heck then needed just 12 pitches to work a 1-2-3 seventh inning to finish off the win.

Along with his win, Thursday, Heck has struck out 21 batters in his last 14 innings, during which time he has walked just two batters and allowed one run.

Matthys finished the game allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out 10.
