Tucker Morrell, Elk River
The senior pitcher outdueled Coon Rapids' highly touted ace Logan Shore as the Elks defeated the Cardinals 2-1 in the season opener. Morrell pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out three and walking one. He threw only 78 pitches, and his only blemish was a two-out unearned run that scored on a throwing error in the second inning.
Half of the Polars' formidable pitching tandem (along with Tabitha Bayers), Pickett, a senior, started in the outfield in a season-opening 11-1 romp over Henry Sibley. She went 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and five total bases. She also pitched one perfect inning, striking out one.
In the Crimson's 14-1 season-opening rout of Champlin Park, the senior left fielder went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and four RBI. In addition to his offensive production, Jacobs made the play of the day with a diving catch that was just over the foul line.
The senior shot a season-opening 77 to win the 18-team Monticello Invitational on Wednesday at the Monticello Country Club. Williams, who finished second (to Breck's Anna Laorr) in the 2011 Class 2A state meet, has signed to play at the University of Wyoming.
