Falling behind 2-0 in the first inning to a team that is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A coaches' poll might be cause for concern for many teams. But for Cretin-Derham Hall, the deficit was hardly an issue.

The top-ranked Raiders needed just two innings to tie the game at 2-2 and eventually scored 12 total unanswered runs as they defeated Suburban East Conference rival East Ridge 12-2 on Monday. The Raiders continue a hot start to the season with the 10-run victory in five innings.

With the Raiders and Raptors ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the most recent state poll, there was plenty of anticipation and excitement heading into Monday’s game. For Cretin-Derham Hall starting pitcher PJ Jones, that excitement led to some nerves and struggles early. Jones walked two batters in the opening inning, with both coming around to score to give East Ridge a 2-0 lead.

“I came in really excited,” Jones said. “I had to settle my nerves a little bit. I really wanted to win and show out.”

First report

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Cretin-Derham Hall tallied 12 unanswered runs as the Raiders defeated Suburban East Conference rival East Ridge 12-2 in five innings on Monday at Cretin-Derham Hall High School.

The Raptors (6-4, 6-4) jumped on the board first when junior Alex Mezzetti drove in the game’s first run on an RBI double. East Ridge, ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 4A coaches’ poll, doubled its lead when starting pitcher Jake Reigert drove in Luke Ryerse on a sacrifice fly.

No. 1-4A Cretin-Derham Hall erased that two-run deficit by the end of the second inning. Junior center fielder Jake Quinn got the Raiders’ first run on a passed ball. Junior Brady Stoeklen came around to make it 2-2 when PJ Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Raiders (8-0, 8-0) added to their lead with big inning after big inning. Cretin-Derham Hall’s Trey Gnetz led the way, going 2-for-2 in Monday’s game, reaching base four times and scoring three runs.

Following the two-run first inning, Jones cruised on the mound, allowing just two baserunners the rest of the game over four innings of work. Gnetz came in and finished off the win for the Raiders, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
