For many teams, falling behind 4-0 before getting a chance to even take an at-bat would be something to fret. But for Mahtomedi’s high-powered offense, it’s more than manageable.

The Zephyrs proved that in Saturday’s Class 3A, Section 4 semifinal as they overcame a 4-0 deficit in the first inning and went on to win 17-5 against North St. Paul in five innings at the University of Northwestern.

High-run totals are nothing new for the Zephyrs (17-4). Heading into the postseason, Mahtomedi had scored at least 10 runs eight times. In the Zephyrs’ first section game against Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi used the bats in a 15-11 win.

First Report

A 4-0 deficit proved not to be much for Mahtomedi to fret in Saturday’s Class 3A, Section 4 semifinal as the Zephyrs came back to defeat North St. Paul 17-5 to next week’s section final.

The Polars (10-12) got their runs early against the defending Class 3A state champions thanks to patience at the plate. North St. Paul drew three walks to go along with three hits in the inning as the No. 3 seed Polars struck early. North St. Paul senior catch Ryan Klein came through with a two-run single in the first.

Top-seeded Mahtomedi (17-4) didn’t wait long to respond as the Zephyrs managed to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning without a hit. Mahtomedi made it 4-4 with a combination of three walks and three North St. Paul errors. Zephyr senior first baseman Quinn Walek drove in a pair of runs on a fielder’s choice and a Polars error.

After a scoreless second inning for both squads, the Mahtomedi bats came alive in the third and fourth innings as the Zephyrs sent a combined 23 players to the plate in the two innings. Mahtomedi juniors Sam Garry and Seth Nelson each delivered a double in the third and fourth innings. Garry finished the day with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Mahtomedi junior Tommy Muetzel came through as one of four Zephyrs to pitch in the win. He entered in the first innings and settled the game down. He threw 2 ⅔ innings with no runs and four hits and a walk.

With the win, Mahtomedi advances to the section final on Thursday. Meanwhile, North St. Paul will play again on Tuesday.
