Editor's note: This is the second installment of the Hubs' newest weekly feature: This week in Hubs history. It's a look back at some of the memorable games and standout performances from the decade since the Hubs started covering softball, baseball and lacrosse games. Each game was played in the given week of the month.
Three was a magic number for Chaska sophomore Reid Young on April 27, 2015.
The Hawks shortstop, who wears No. 3, hit a three-run home run to propel Chaska past Chanhassen 10-2 in a Metro West Conference matchup.
The Hawks were clinging to a 1-0 lead and had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth inning when Young came to the plate. His shot over the right-center field fence not only made a lasting impression on him but also his coach.
“That was the best hit of my life and that home run’s going to memorable because of the rivalry,” Young said.
Hawks coach Craig Baumann said he was surprised by Young’s unexpectedly powerful swing.
“I don’t think I’ve seen him a hit a ball past where the outfielders were standing,” Baumann said. “But a blind dog finds a bone once in a while.”
Junior Jacob Nelson scored what proved to be the winning goal 5 minutes, 4 seconds into the fourth quarter as the Minnetonka boys held on for a 6-5 victory over Orono on Saturday, April 25, 2013 at Minnetonka High School.
Six players scored for the Skippers, who underwent an overhaul of their attack line in the offseason.
Orono surged to a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter and could have led by much more if not for several difficult saves by Minnetonka senior goaltender Nick Larson.
The Skippers, No. 8 in the coaches poll, took control by scoring five unanswered goals to close out the first half.
Holly Blaska's home run helped shift the momentum in Champlin Park's favor as the Rebels rallied to a 13-3 victory over Bemidji on April 27, 2017.
The sophomore's home run sparked a rally in the bottom of the third that saw Champlin Park erase a 3-1 deficit and take an 8-3 lead.
The Rebels held the Lumberjacks scoreless for the remaining three innings.
