Benilde-St. Margaret’s senior Dylan Drees bounced off the mound fired up after getting the final out of the sixth inning.

The lanky right-handed pitcher threw a four-hitter, shutting out Monticello over the final six innings as the Red Knights upset the top-seeded Magic 2-1 in the Class 3A semifinals Friday at Siebert Field on the University of Minnesota campus.

The Red Knights (16-9) will be seeking their first state championship in program history next Thursday at Target Field.

“Hanging six zeroes in a row was something,” Drees said. “I was pretty locked in today. This was one of my strongest performances.”

Drees got the final out of the bottom of the sixth on a fly ball to left field with Magic runners on first and third. He then retired the side in order in the seventh, getting two on strikeouts, his only ones for the game.

“I had to bear down in the sixth,” Drees said. “I was a little shaken with the tying run on third. I was fired up after getting that last out.”

Monticello senior Tommy Blackstone didn’t waste any time getting the Magic (19-6) on the board. He led off the bottom of the first with a single, went to second on a wild pick-off attempt, third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Red Knights tied it at one-all in the fourth on senior Matthew Hansberry's sacrifice fly to right field after back-to-back singles by seniors Matt Murnane and Evan Brown.

They scored the go-ahead run an inning later in similar fashion to Monticello’s first run. Sophomore Jonny Woodford led off with a single, advanced to second on an error, reached third on a fly ball to center field and scored on a wild pitch.

Check back later for more on the game.
