After striking out in his first two at-bats against Hill-Murray pitcher Mitt Gutknecht, Austin sophomore Teyghan Hovland learned quickly.

Hovland dropped a fly ball just over the outstretched glove of Hill-Murray’s center fielder for a two-run single during a three-run sixth inning, rallying the Packers past the Pioneers 3-1 in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Siebert Field.

“His curveball was really working against me, and I figured he would throw it again,” Hovland said. “I just wanted to get the ball out there somewhere. I sat back on it, and that’s what happened.”

Gutknecht was masterful through the first five innings. The lefthander had limited the Packers to three hits, with only one reaching the outfield. He struck out nine and walked one in his complete-game performance.

Hovland also picked up the win on the mound. He allowed five hits while striking out three and walking four in 6⅔ innings. Senior Hunter Guyette came on to get the final out on a shallow fly ball to left field with the bases loaded.
