Mahtomedi vs. Eastview

4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 23

It should come as no surprise that Mahtomedi is peaking just before entering the postseason. The No. 10-3A Zephyrs have been to five consecutive Class 3A state tournaments, and they seem to be capitalizing on their opportunities to set up another trip to state.

Winners of eight of their last nine contests, the Zephyrs (11-6, 10-6) have recovered from a slow 3-5 start to the season.

Part of Mahtomedi’s resurgence is due to a trio of upperclassmen hitters that have lengthened the lineup. Junior Leo Bustos and seniors Jacob Arlandson and Andrew Murphy each have an average of .389 or better and they have 15 RBI apiece.

Eastview (13-5, 13-5) has put on a ferocious campaign across the south metro and has yet to play a game outside the South Suburban Conference this season. A matchup against the Zephyrs should be an ideal change of pace to close out the regular season.

The No. 8-4A Lightning feature their own formidable lineup, led by juniors Caden Espinda Banick and Ben Malloy. Banick hits .352 and has 15 RBI, while Malloy has a .391 BA with 13 RBI.
