Neither Northfield nor Red Wing made much noise in Big 9 Conference play a season ago, but the Wingers flew in rare air once they reached the Class 3A, Section 1 playoffs.
After recording a 2-0 defeat to Northfield in the opening game of the double-elimination section tournament, Red Wing toppled the rest of its competition to claim the section title and advance to state — although the Wingers did not face the Raiders again in the playoffs.
Northfield, which also defeated beat Red Wing in their only regular-season meeting a year ago, looks to continue its recent run of success against its familiar opponent on Tuesday in the first of two scheduled meetings this season.
The Raiders (0-1, 0-0) opened this season with a 7-0 loss to Winona in a nonconference game last Thursday but should be ready to avoid a similar outing against the Wingers. Third baseman Joey Glampe, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI in the section playoffs against Red Wing, is a key figure in the lineup and could help get the Raiders’ bats going.
Red Wing (1-0, 0-0) opened this season on April 5 with a 7-3 nonconference win over Austin. Barrent Blaney, a senior, pulled double duty in the victory, tossing three scoreless innings and producing a pair of hits at the plate. Senior Alec Borgen also impressed, finishing with two hits and three RBI.
