ST. CLOUD -- Minnehaha Academy showed flashes Thursday of why it is the No. 1 seed the Class 2A baseball state tournament. Four strikeouts in the fourth and fifth innings for pitcher Brock Brumley were nice. So were the two-out, two-run rallies the Redhawks had in back-to-back innings to push its lead to six runs over Warroad.

But the Redhawks also benefited from mistakes by the Warriors early in the game to jump in front en route to a 10-5 victory at Dick Putz Field.

Warroad (19-7) had three errors in the bottom of the first inning as Minnehaha Academy (24-2) built a 4-1 lead.

A dropped pop up in left field and a throw that missed the cut-off man allowed the Redhawks to get their first run across and load the bases. Justin Evenson singled in two more runs, and later, with the bases still loaded, a dropped forceout at second base allowed another run to score.

Evenson’s twin brother, Alex, benefitted from poor fielding in the next inning when he hit a hard line drive to right fielder, who dropped it. That drove in infielder Kenny Kiratli, who reached base because of another mismanaged fly ball in right field.

The Redhawks added to their lead in the fourth inning, when Jordan Goth doubled in two runs, and Evenson did the same an inning later. Justin Evenson hit a solo home run in the sixth.

“We just started the innings with two outs,” said Alex Evenson, who scored twice and got on base with a single, double and walk. “Someone got a hit, another person walks, and then we’re already a scoring threat. I think we just continued to put pressure on them and make them make mistakes. We capitalized.”

Warroad scored two runs in the third inning and had another two-run rally in the sixth. But Minnehaha Academy’s Bennett Theisen came on in relief to overpower Warroad’s Beau Wilmer for a strikeout.
