Mahtomedi at North St. Paul
7 p.m., Wednesday, May 13

The only difference between Mahtomedi and North St. Paul in the Metro East Conference standings is a 3-2 head-to-head victory by the Zephyrs on April 22.

Mahtomedi's 7-foot ace Sean Hjelle, who committed to Kentucky earlier this spring, struck out nine Polars for the victory. Louie Varland took the loss for North St. Paul, while Brandon Herold was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

But with only a one-game edge in the loss column, the No. 7-3A Zephyrs (14-1, 12-1) could see their lead disappear when the Polars (13-2, 11-2) host the rematch Wednesday night.

Since the loss to Mahtomedi, North St. Paul has won eight straight games, allowing one or fewer runs six times in that span. Senior pitcher Zach Lauzon has been an ace, striking out more than a batter per inning and winning four games, while senior pitcher Gus Varland is 4-1.
