Mounds View at Cretin-Derham Hall
4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 6

Two-time defending Class 3A state champion Mounds View entered the season with enough question marks that the Mustangs weren’t considered the favorites this spring. But a month into the season and that’s right where the Mustangs have risen.

No. 1-3A Mounds View (12-1, 9-1) has dropped just one game — and it’s the only game all season in which the Mustangs pitching staff allowed more than three runs -- a 7-5 loss to Woodbury on April 24.

Otherwise, the pitching staff has been flawless, even without graduated ace Sam Hentges. Henry DeCaster is the new staff No. 1, going 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 22 innings, while Charlie Callahan is 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA in 16 innings.

The Mustangs face a test Wednesday when they visit No. 3-3A Cretin-Derham Hall (10-3, 7-3) in a key Suburban East Conference battle. The Raiders are coming off a 1-0 victory over Woodbury in their last game, as Cole Gnetz pitched a complete-game one-hitter and Dan Ryan went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
