Tough lefty reflects on 8-1 record, fourth trip to state

David Koll

A few moments with Stillwater pitcher David Koll, a lefty with an 8-1 record so far this season.

Most memorable high school moment: Beating Cretin-Derham Hall two times in a row in the section championship last year to go to state. I pitched all seven innings in the first game and two innings in the second game.

How has being lefthanded helped you as a baseball player? It's something coaches look for. There's not as many of them, so it gives opponents a different look.

What is your bread-and-butter pitch? I really like my curveball. I can throw it at any time in the count. It just tumbles, close to a 12-6 curve.

Was it tough to develop? Well, I throw it a little differently. I hold it kind of like a knuckleball. Some people call it a spike curve.

How did you come up with that pitch? It's something I picked up when I was real young. I didn't want to put any stress on my arm.

What do hitters say about it? I get a lot of comments from people on it. People say it just drops off the table.

Stillwater won the Section 4, 3A championship Tuesday. What does that mean for the program? It's our fourth year in a row going to state. It's a lot of fun. It's the reason you play sports.

How important high school baseball in relation to other teams you play on? It's the No. 1 priority. Every other team I play on is just training for the high school season.
