When LeBron James announced his decision to leave his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat last summer, cynical fans cried that any superstar would forsake his roots for money.
Joe Mauer says it isn’t so. The Minnesota Twins catcher could see free agency and mountains of cash on the horizon but he opted to stay with the team he grew up with, while coming of age in the Twin Cities during the ‘90s.
Sure, Mauer signed a massive $184 million eight-year extension in 2010 but the reality is that he could have made much more on the open market.
