Lakeville North 6, Rochester Mayo 2: Trailing 2-1 with only three outs to go in the game, Lakeville North (15-5) came up with five runs to defeat Rochester Mayo (11-9) in the Class 4A, Section 1 playoffs. The Panthers' Ryan Bastyr tied the game 2-2 with a solo home run, and his teammates loaded the bases to set up what would be the final at-bat of the game as Michael Dooney hit a walk-off grand slam to complete the comeback.
Wabasha-Kellogg 3, Randolph 2: Losing in the sixth inning, Wabasha-Kellogg (11-7) pushed across a run to tie the score at 2 and force the game into extra innings. The Falcons plated another run in the eighth inning to seal the victory over Randolph (14-4) in Class 1A, Section 1 play. Wabasha-Kellogg's Jackson Gosse was 2-for-3, including a triple, and scored two runs while teammate Cooper Holtorf also had two hits with two RBI. Randolph's Matt Weber was 3-for-4 with a triple.
Rosemount 6, Burnsville 1: Aidan Maldonado pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits while striking out 11 to lead Rosemount (9-12) to an upset victory over Burnsville (15-5). The No. 8-4A Blaze's Andrew Hanson was 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate, but the Irish scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
East Ridge 8, Eastview 4: With four runs in the third inning, East Ridge took control of the Class 4A, Section 3 game in Dundas. Eastview scored four of the next five runs, but could not close the gap on the Raptors. Cam Hunter scored a run and knocked in three RBI during his 3-for-4 night for East Ridge (13-7), while teammate Brendan McKevitt scored three runs as he reached base on three hits. Cullen Buck doubled, walked and scored a run for the No 10-4A Lightning (14-6).
St. Paul Highland Park 4, Richfield 1: St. Paul Highland Park scored twice in both the third and fifth innings to record a win over Richfield in a Class 3A, Section 3 game. Josh Aune led St. Paul Highland Park, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and teammate Paul Idstrom was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Pitcher Danny Bielieski earned the win after surrendering only two hits and striking out four in pitching six innings. Ben Hodek had an RBI and Patrick Voigt had a stolen base for Richfield.
Northfield 5, Austin 4: The game was tied 4-4 going into the sixth inning, but Northfield scored the game-winner in its half of the inning. The Raiders' Connor Malecha went 1-for-2 with two RBI, and Jim Vitito finished 1-for-2 with a double. Pitcher Cole Quiram earned the win after taking over in the fifth inning. Phillip Zynda went 2-for-3 with a double and had three RBI while Hunter Guyette went 1-for-2 with a double and had two walks for the Packers.
St. Croix Prep 3, St. Agnes 2: St. Croix Prep scored three runs in the sixth inning to rally for the victory in this Class 2A, Section 4 game. Joe Vondrachek had an RBI and Carter Rogness went 1-for-1 for St. Croix Prep. Vondrachek earned the win on the mound, recording seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Darius Lopez led St. Agnes at the plate and on the mound. He posted a triple and an RBI while also striking out 12. Teammate Ben Fischer went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
St. Anthony Village 12, Blake 11: Trailing by five runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, St. Anthony Village (11-7) scored five times to send the game into extra innings. The Huskies ended the game one inning later. Cameron Melin was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and six RBI in the win. Blake's (8-10) Ethan Roe hit two doubles scored two runs and drove in one in a game that featured 28 total hits.
Pierz 1, Melrose 0: Matthew Tautges pitched a complete-game shutout for Pierz (16-1). The Pioneers hurler gave up six hits, walked one and struck out eight in the win. With hits at a premium, Matthew Kummet had the biggest hit of the contest -- a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth. Melrose (12-9) pitcher Brennen Hoppe gave up just five hits.
Benilde-St. Margaret's 6, Orono 5: Losing by two runs in the bottom of the sixth, No. 4-3A Benilde-St. Margaret's scored four times to take the lead and hung on in the seventh to win. Derek Drees had two hits, including a double, and three RBI and Peyton James also had two hits and a RBI for the Red Knights (14-6). Tommy Deters had three RBI for Orono (5-13).
Park of Cottage Grove 2, Eastview 1: Behind by a run heading into the seventh inning, Park of Cottage Grove (10-9) scored two twice to take the lead and then shut down No. 10-4A Eastview (14-6) in the bottom of the inning to win. Nathan Larson and Jake Hoge each knocked in a run for the Wolfpack, while pitcher Brandon Alt went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out six. The Lightning's Danny Kapala allowed just six hits and two runs in pitching six-plus innings.
Hopkins 3, Robbinsdale Armstrong 2: Hopkins scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Robbinsdale Armstrong in the Class 4A, Section 6 semifinal. Hopkins’ Ben Wahlen went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Teammate Kyle Chiraboga contributed a triple and pitcher Wyatt Nelson earned the win. Alex Proctor had a double and an RBI and pitcher Mitchell Waletzki struck out six for the Falcons.
Delano 5, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 4: Jordan Schramel gave up four runs in the top of the first inning but was nearly unhittable the rest of the way – leading Delano (14-5) to the victory. Michael Kurtz had a hit, a RBI and a stolen base for the Tigers. Matt Murnane hit a double, a triple and scored a run for No. 4-3A Benilde-St. Margaret's (14-6).
Cretin-Derham Hall 7, Tartan 3: Consistent offense powered Cretin-Derham Hall to a win over Tartan in the Class 4A, Section 4 matchup. Dawson Degnan led the Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. Thomas Cummings also contributed a double and an RBI. Pitcher Alec Tennis earned the win, striking out six in six innings. Tartan’s Brock Russell had a stolen base and an RBI, and teammate Corbin Reilling went 2-for-2 with a triple. Pitcher Andrew Maslowski struck out six for the Titans.
Brainerd 3, St. Michael-Albertville 0: A run in the fourth and two more in the fifth were all McCale Peterson needed to win his one-hit complete game shutout for Brainerd (11-8). Peterson also hit an RBI single and reached base twice. Marcus Krupke pitched 2 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball for No. 5-4A St. Michael-Albertville (19-1).
Eden Prairie 2, Minnetonka 1: Unable to score through six innings, Eden Prairie (11-9) broke through in the top of the seventh. The Eagles then took a lead in the eighth that would hold onto in the top of the ninth. Ryan Wrobleski had two hits – including a home run -- and scored both runs for Eden Prairie. Jimmy Ramsey gave up one run in 6 1/3 innings for No. 3-4A Minnetonka (16-4).
Duluth East 2, Blaine 1: Drew Grindahl pitched seven innings of one-run baseball for Duluth East (12-7). Carter Peterson pitched two scoreless innings to get the win, and Jonathan Sailstad had two hits and a RBI for the Greyhounds in the nine-inning victory. Sam Riola gave up just three hits over seven innings, striking out six for Blaine (17-3).
East Ridge 3, Rosemount 2: Rosemount scored a run in the top of the ninth to break a 1-1 tie, but East Ridge answered with a run in the bottom half and then scored again in the bottom of the 10th to win this Class 4A, Section 3 winners' bracket game. Max Morris went 2-for-3 with a double for East Ridge. Teammate Charlie Larson contributed with an RBI. Pitcher Cam Hunter earned the win pitching 4 1/3 innings. Alec Schimmel sparked the Rosemount offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Griffin Lanou had an RBI at the plate and struck out nine on the mound.
Champlin Park 1, Centennial 0: Champlin Park's Max Loven and his counterpart, Kyle Nordby of Centennial (11-9), were nearly perfect through seven innings. Loven allowed just five hits over eight innings, and Nordby gave up just four hits. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Zach Loven hit an RBI double to seal the victory for the No. 6-4A Rebels (13-5).
Hayfield 4, Randolph 3: Three runs in the fourth gave Hayfield the lead, and the Vikings (8-11) withstood a seventh-inning rally to hold off Randolph. Hayfield's Adam Fjerstad gave up three hits and a run in five innings for the win, while Brady Dahl's two-RBI double was the difference-making hit. Andrew Wenstrom ended the game with a double and two RBIs for the Rockets (14-4).
Minnehaha Academy 4, St. Paul Academy 3: A run in the bottom of the seventh by No. 2-2A Minnehaha Academy sent the game into extra innings, and the Redhawks (18-2) won when they got a single run in the bottom of the 10th. Noah Dehne had two hits, including a solo home run, for Minnehaha Academy. Emerson Egly had three hits – including two doubles – with two RBI for St. Paul Academy (10-8).
Red Wing 3, Northfield 2: In a battle between two ranked teams, No. 6-3A Red Wing broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held on as No. 10-3A Northfield scored a single run in the top of the seventh before falling to the Wingers. Seth Yeatman had two hits, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored for Red Wing (13-7) and teammate Teddy Tauer pitched six innings allowing just one earned run for the win. Carter Hodapp had two hits – including a double – and a RBI for the No. 10-3A Raiders (12-8) in the loss.
