A twelve-run sixth inning was everything Breck (1-1) needed to overrun Spectrum 16-4 on Wednesday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Soren Salveson delivered the decisive blow – a bases-clearing, opposite field double on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the sixth inning that stretched the Mustangs’ lead to 9-4. Salveson recorded four RBI on the afternoon.
Spectrum (0-1) grabbed a 4-1 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run single by Logan Johnson. Behind the pitching of freshman T.J. Rathman, who scattered five hits and gave up three runs, walked one and struck out three in four innings, Spectrum looked to be in control early on.
But Breck chipped away at the Sting’s early lead, scoring one run in each of the game’s middle three innings before opening it up in the sixth.
The Mustangs’ struck for only six hits in the sixth, but they drew six walks and sent 18 batters to the plate.
Sophomore Leo Sanborn started for Breck and allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking just one in five innings of work.
Sanborn earned the win, his first of the season. Jordan Schlueter took the loss for Spectrum.
