Last season's left fielder, Alex Evenson (7), will probably play a big role on the mound against New Life Academy. He is the only Redhawk on the roster to throw more than 10 innings last season. Photo by Nick Wosika, SportsEngine
Minnehaha Academy won its final game of the 2016 season, a 5-1 victory over Belle Plaine in the Class 2A state championship. The state title was the first in the program's history, and now the Redhawks are back for more.
The first club to take aim at the defending champions will be New Life Academy, a team that has formed a budding rivalry with Minnehaha Academy. After winning the Class 1A title in 2014 and 2015, the Eagles moved to Class 2A last year, and after winning 20 of their first 22 games, faced off against the Redhawks in the section playoffs.
New Life Academy won the first game, but Minnehaha Academy recovered with two back-to-back wins against the Eagles to end New Life Academy's season. This early-season rematch at Fort Snelling will add another piece to the rivalry and is our Top Game of the Week.
