With a combined 28 state tournament appearances and 13 state championships, Eden Prairie and Cretin-Derham Hall certainly can be considered two of the elite high school baseball programs in Minnesota. But their legacies are a bit different, mainly in the time frame of their most dominant stretches.

Cretin-Derham Hall is second in state history with 19 total state tournament appearances (tied with New Ulm and Austin, one behind Bemidji’s record of 20) and a record 11 state championships, beginning with the 1981 title and running through its last championship in 2007. The Raiders have been dominant for more than three decades.

Meanwhile, Eden Prairie is the relative newcomer, with all nine of its state bids coming since 1998 and both titles coming within the 2000s (2004 and 2010). But whereas Cretin-Derham Hall hasn’t made a state appearance since its title in 2007, the Eagles have advanced six of the last eight years.

Both are on track to continue their legacy this spring, as Eden Prairie is No. 4 in the latest Class 3A rankings provided by Let’s Play Baseball, and Cretin-Derham Hall is No. 3. Their meeting Monday just off South Albert Street in St. Paul is our Game of the Week.
