The most compelling aspect of the Class 2A tournament might be the race across class designations between two coaches with a combined age of 140 years. St. Cloud Cathedral’s Bob Karn (72) became the winningest high school baseball coach in state history, collecting his 708th victory in the Crusaders’ 6-0 Section 6 championship game victory over Little Falls. Seeded No. 1, Cathedral will face first-time entrant Blake in Thursday’s quarterfinals. … Right on Karns’ heels is Brainerd coach Lowell Scearcy (68), who picked up his 706th victory when the Warriors beat Alexandria to win the Section 8, 3A championship. … Quarterfinal foes Delano and Glencoe-Silver Lake both play in the Wright County Conference. Glencoe won their only meeting 9-7. … Delano’s Toby Hanson and St. Cloud Cathedral’s Jeff Fasching will be teammates on the University of Minnesota baseball team next year. … Fairmont has won 23 consecutive games after losing its season opener.
