May 9: New Ulm heads to the big city for a showdown with unbeaten St. Anthony

New Ulm traveling north to the big city to face a top team might seem like a big deal, but the Eagles have already been there and done that. And won. Multiple times.

New Ulm, a baseball town if ever there was one, toppled Maple Grove 9-8 on Saturday to finish a run of three straight wins against metro area teams (the Eagles beat Minneapolis Southwest on Friday and Annandale earlier on Saturday in tournament games in St. Cloud).

The big city for No. 6-ranked New Ulm on Friday technically isn’t Minneapolis, but close enough. The Eagles will be in the shadow of downtown when they take on No. 2 St. Anthony Village in a matchup of two of the state’s hottest Class 2A teams. New Ulm is 9-1 and riding an eight-game win streak through Saturday. The Huskies are unbeaten through their first nine games.

History also tells us this is a can't-miss matchup. New Ulm has made 19 state tournament appearances, winning titles in 2002 and 2005. St. Anthony Village has made five state tournament trips, all since 2002. The Huskies won championships in 2006 and 2008.
