Logan Sandgren referred to BOLD as a “no-show” in last year’s state tournament. He took it personally. Sandgren threw a one-hit shutout, leading the Warriors to a 3-0 victory over Osakis in the Class 1A finals on Monday morning at Target Field.

BOLD is the Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian school district.

The lefthander was in pursuit of his third consecutive no-hitter. Sandgren threw a no-hitter in the state tournament quarterfinals, a 13-0 six-inning victory due to the 10-run rule over top-seeded Wabasha-Kellogg. He also threw a no-hitter in his last outing in the Section 2 tournament, a 12-0 triumph over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

He had his third consecutive no-hit bid broken up by senior Douglas Zimmel with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Osakis catcher singled to center field. BOLD (18-6) scored the only run Sandgren would need in the top of the second inning. No. 8 hitter sophomore left fielder Austin Weis blooped a two-out single over shortstop to score Tyler Seehusen from third base. Seehusen opened the inning by walking, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout.

The Warriors made it 2-0 in the fourth when Weis’ two-out single skipped past Osakis’ left fielder, allowing junior Sawyer Tersteeg to score all the way from first base. Tersteeg singled with two outs. BOLD added a third run on an error in the sixth inning.

Osakis (20-3), the No. 3 seed in the eight-team field, shut out its first two opponents in the state tournament. It beat Blackduck 10-0 and second-seeded New York Mills 3-0.
