Quarterfinal winners: New York Mills, Osakis, St. Agnes, BOLD

BOLD no-hits top-seeded Wabasha-Kellogg

BOLD junior Logan Sandgren knew he was going to have to be at his best Thursday. He was -- both on the mound and at the plate.

The left-hander threw a no-hitter as the Warriors upset top-seeded Wabasha-Kellogg 13-0 in the opening quarterfinal game of the Class 1A baseball state tournament at the Mini Met in Jordan. Sandgren threw a no-hitter in his previous outing, a 12-0 victory over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in the Section 2 tournament.

Sandgren, who struck out six and walked three in the six-inning game due to the 10-run rule, and Will Greenheck of Wabasha-Kellogg were locked up in a pitchers’ duel until BOLD erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning. The Warriors (16-6) entered the frame with a 1-0 lead thanks to an unearned run.

Sandgren had his third consecutive hit in the uprising, a two-run single with two outs. He finished 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Teammate sophomore Trent Athmann also had a two-run single later in the fifth as all eight runs scored with two men out. The Warriors had four consecutive run-scoring hits in the inning.

The Falcons (17-2) entered the matchup only allowing more than one run in a game twice in their previous 12 games. They aided the Warriors’ offense by committing five errors.

St. Agnes resumes shutout trend

St. Agnes junior pitcher Jack Fossand is hard enough to score on during the regular season. He is at another level when it comes to the state tournament.

The right-hander threw his third consecutive shutout in state tourney play, a four-hitter in 1-0 victory over Windom Area on a bright, sunny Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A baseball state tournament at the Mini Met in Jordan.

The defending state champion Aggies (14-6) shut out all three of their opponents en route to the school’s second state crown in 2012. Fossand registered two of those shutouts.

Fossand blanked New York Mills 1-0 in the quarterfinals and Lac qui Parle Valley 6-0 in the championship a year ago. He threw a three-hitter against New York Mills and allowed four hits in the finals.

Junior Joe McDonald provided Fossand with the only run he needed against the Eagles (13-9) in the bottom of the first inning. The designated hitter delivered a run-scoring single to right field with two outs, scoring junior Jake Gutzmann.

When it looked like Windom Area might score on Fossand to tie it at one, Gutzmann bailed him out with his strong arm. The centerfielder threw a strike to catcher Alex Kleve, nailing pinch-runner Andrew Larson at the plate following a single by Jacob Johnson in the fifth inning.

The Eagles were shut out for the first time this season.

First-timer Osakis rolls over Blackduck

Osakis hardly looked like a group making its initial state tournament appearance.

The Silverstreaks had their offense rolling from the outset, and junior Jordan Frederick was unflappable on the hill in a 10-0 victory over Blackduck on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Frederick also drove in two runs with a double and scored three times in the first three innings when the Silverstreaks (19-2) raced to a 10-0 lead. They also benefitted from eight walks and two hit batters during that time.

Frederick and Kilar Zimmel combined to throw a three-hitter in the five-inning game due to the 10-run rule. Frederick allowed all three hits while striking out five and walking one while working the first four innings.

New York Mills rallies late over Floodwood

New York Mills had its fill of the consolation bracket the past two years. It took a seventh-inning rally to prevent another disappointment.

Junior Daniel Kraft’s infield grounder with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh scored Tyler Ehnert with the winning run. It was the only time New York Mills (20-2) led in the game.

“The last couple of years we didn’t have the confidence we could win,” New York Mills winning pitcher junior Brandon Kupfer said. “We felt we could win this game coming into it.”

Kupfer tied it at five earlier in the inning with a run-scoring single with one out. He went 2-for-3 and Ehnert scored twice running for him.

“I had to step up and be a leader,” Kupfer said. “I had to make up for the way I pitched. It’s nice to finally get that first win here.”

Junior first baseman Tyler Patron belted a two-run home run for New York Mills.
