BSM hands out awards at annual banquet

Labosky earns trio of awards to highlight evening.


Dan Labosky collected a hat trick of awards, earning team MVP honors to go with All-Conference and Academic All-Conference recognition.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s held its annual banquet Wednesday with awards being presented to the high school’s three teams.

Freshmen coaches Joel Loecken and Joe Boyd presented their team with participation certificates. The Freshmen Coach’s Award went to Payton Miller and the Sportsmanship Award was given to Joe Martino.

B-Squad coaches Rob Eberle and Keith Johnson also presented participation certificates to their team. Conor Deterding received the team’s Coach’s Award and Alex Messer was named the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.

The Varsity team was awarded their varsity letters. Players earning varsity letters were Dan Labosky, Grant Besse, Johnny Vecere, Connor Day, Keaton Studsrud, Mikey McGill, Matt Ambre, Peter Watkins, Chris Landis, John O’Connor, Sam Lynch, Michael Kaminski, Chris Racchini, Colin Polarek, Jimmy Cron, Nathan Hanks, Dunham DeRemer, Riley Simonetti and Marshall Hoemke.

Academic All-Conference Awards, given to senior players in the North Suburban Conference for academic excellence, were given to the team’s three seniors; Ambre, Besse and Labosky.

All-Conference honors went to Cron, Labosky, McGill and Studsrud while honorable mention all-conference awards were received by Hanks, Kaminski and Lynch.

Four individual team awards were present with Labosky earning the team’s Most Valuable Player award. While starting in all 18 games this spring, Labosky has batted .379 with a team-best .534 slugging percentage from the leadoff spot in the order. He has also made six relief pitching appearances, going 1-1 with two saves and has struckout 11 batters in six and two-thirds innings.

The Sportsmanship Award went to Polarek, who has filled a variety of roles for the Red Knights this season. He has hit .250 while leading the team with three sacrifices and is also tied with Labosky for the team lead with six pitching appearances. He has posted a 3.62 earned run average while going 2-0 with one saves.

Studsrud earned the Coach’s Award. He leads the teams in runs batted in (13), walks (12), on-base percentage (.471) and stolen bases (8). He’s batting .352 on the season and has made a pair of relief appearances on the mound.

Peter Watkins was named the winner of the team’s Gonsior Hustle Award. He’s handled the majority of the catching duties for the Red Knights in his first varsity season, seeing action in 17 of 18 games with 13 starts behind the plate.

BSM will begin Section 6AAA playoff action this weekend. Seeds for the playoff schedule, along with opponents, times and locations of games will be announced Thursday evening. First-round games are slated for Saturday while second-round games are scheduled for Monday at the Metrodome.
