BSM overcomes first-inning deficit to down Fridley.

Mikey McGill continued his hot hitting with a 4-for-4 performance which included his first career homerun.

Mikey McGill went 4-for-4, including his first career homerun, and Connor Day made his first varsity start, allowing just one run over six innings, as Benilde-St. Margaret’s claimed a 6-1 win over Fridley in a North Suburban Conference game.

McGill’s performance at the plate is the continuation of a hot-hitting week in which he has gone 10-for-15 with four RBI in four games and has slugged .933.

Day gave up a double to Tiger leadoff hitter Matt Duehn on the game’s first pitch and a two-out single by Taylor Groth gave the home team an early 1-0 lead.

After that, Day worked five scoreless innings, retiring six of the final eight batters he faced while allowing his lone walk of the game. He finished with four strikeouts.

The Red Knights took the lead in the top of the third inning when Keaton Studsrud led off with a single and scored one out later on Michael Kaminski’s base hit. Kaminski would eventually score on an error and BSM never looked back.

Marshall Hoemke led off the fourth inning with a single and Dan Labosky walked. One out later the pair executed a double steal before walks to Studsrud and Grant Besse made it a 3-1 score.

In the sixth inning, Kaminski once again drove in Studsrud with a base hit and McGill followed with his homerun to right field.

After Day worked through the sixth, Jimmy Cron came on to work a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the Red Knights’ seventh win of the season.

McGill’s, who has three or more hits in three consecutive games, led the BSM offense, which got two hits each from Labosky, who extended his hitting streak to 10 games, Kaminski and Nathan Hanks.

The Red Knights return home, Thursday for the first of two home conference games in the next two days. They will face North Branch in a 4:30 p.m. game tomorrow before hosting Spring Lake Park in a 4:15 p.m. game Saturday.

BSM is slated to finish out the week, having played seven games in six days, Saturday with a 10 a.m. game at Cretin-Derham Hall.
