Red Wing's highly rated MLB draft prospect has surgery, ends high school career

Red Wing outfielder Ryan Boldt was named the 2012 Perfect Game All-American Class MVP.

Ryan Boldt will miss the rest of the high school baseball season. Red Wing's nationally regarded outfielder underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday. The minor surgery revealed a small tear in his meniscus, which was repaired at TRIA orthopaedics.

"The doctor said his knee is very healthy and this is a very repairable situation. The blood flow and everything is fine," Mitch Boldt, Ryan's father, said Wednesday. "It's going to take some time. He won't play any high school ball. But now that we know there is a physical injury there, we want to make sure it is a 100 percent."

Boldt, a senior, was considered by many scouts to be an obvious first-round selection in Major League Baseball's June amateur draft. Last summer, he helped lead the U.S. National 18U Team to a gold medal and was the Perfect Game All-American Classic MVP.

The speedy outfielder injured his knee sliding into third base during the team's season opener April 26 in Rochester against Farmington. He continued to play before tweaking it again in the second game of a doubleheader.

An MRI was inconclusive, but warned of a small tear to the meniscus. Boldt planned to rest the bone bruise for a week before attempting a return. This past weekend, that changed. Mitch Boldt said his son’s knee continued to hurt, and on Monday they returned to the doctor where the decision was made to pursue surgery.

No specific timeline has been put on a return, but Boldt hopes to be ready for summer baseball, his father said. The MLB draft is June 6-8.
