Two homers, two bunt hits and a save by BSM co-captain sparks two wins.

Dan Labosky extended his hitting streak to seven games and picked up a game-one save for his second of the season.

Dan Labosky homered in both games and picked up a save in the first game of a doubleheader as Benilde-St. Margaret’s swept Chisago Lakes, 5-4 and 7-4.

The first game of the twinbill, which counted in the North Suburban Conference standings, saw the Red Knights take a 5-0 lead before hanging on for the one-run victory.

Labosky bunted for a hit to start the game for BSM and Sam Lynch followed with a double. However, the Red Knights’ starting centerfielder, after collecting his fourth consecutive hit over two games, left the game with a leg injury and would not return the rest of the day. One out later, Michael Kaminski singled home Labosky and pinch runner Colin Polarek.

The bottom of the second saw BSM add to its lead when Labosky hit his first career home run with one out.

Base hits by Kaminski and Matt Ambre in the third inning led to another two runs for the Red Knights. Marshall Hoemke would single home one run and Nathan Hanks drew a bases-loaded walk to give BSM a 5-0 lead.

The Wildcats then came back with two runs in the top of the fourth as they opened the inning with three consecutive hits, including Mitch Berg’s two-run single, before Mikey McGill worked out of the inning with a three-run lead.

The scored remained 5-2 until the seventh when Kellen Reed led of the inning with a single, which brought on Labosky in relief of McGill.

Labosky’s was reached for a pair of soft singles to load the bases before Ryan Biernath hit into a fielder’s choice to plate one run. A Joey Gillach base hit got Chisago Lakes to within one run before Labosky ended the game with a strikeout and a groundout for his second consecutive save.

McGill, who worked six-plus innings, allowed three runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Offensively, Labosky, Kaminski and Ambre each had two hits to lead the Red Knights.

Game two saw Labosky launch the third pitch of the game off the scoreboard in right-center field to give BSM an early lead.

Labosky also drove in the second run of the game when Chris Landis led off by reaching second base on a throwing error. Peter Watkins took over as a courtesy runner for the catcher and immediately moved to third base on Polarek’s sacrifice bunt before Labosky’s sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats even the score in the top of the third inning without a hit as they used three walks, a wild pitch and a throwing error to score a pair of runs.

Keaton Studsrud led off the third inning with a walk and McGill followed with a single to right field. When the ball rolled past Matt Hasselquist, Studsrud scored from first with McGill advancing to third, from where he scored on Matt Ambre’s infield single.

In the fourth inning, Polarek led off with a walk and Labosky bunted to start the frame. One out late, Polarek scored on a Studsrud basehit and he and Labosky scored on McGill’s double, giving the hosts a 7-2 lead.

After pitching two scoreless innings, Hoemke ran into trouble in the sixth inning and returned to right field after giving up two runs and leaving the bases loaded with one out.

Polarek, who came on with one and the bases loaded, got a groundball for a double play on his second pitch and then worked a scoreless seventh to pick up his first career save.

McGill led the offense with three hits and two RBI while Labosky had two hits and two RBI while Ambre singled twice.

Hoemke picked up his first career win by allowing two runs in two and one-third innings of work. He allowed just one hit but walked four and struckout one. The Red Knights were also aided by their defense in the game as they turned three double plays.

BSM continues a busy week, which sees them slated to play six days in a row, with a non-conference game Tuesday at Wayzata. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
