Cron pitches BSM to victory over Hornets.

Jimmy Cron won his second consecutive start with a six-inning outing, in which he allowed just two runs on four hits.

Twentieth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s picked up a key Section 6AAA victory with a 3-2 win over 17th-ranked Edina at BSM Field two end a two-game losing streak.

After dropping a 9-4 decision at St. Louis Park, Monday, and an 11-4 contest at St. Francis, Tuesday, the Red Knights were looking to rebound against a Hornet team which had won three of its last four games.

Jimmy Cron turned in his second consecutive outstanding start on the mound, working six innings for the victory, and Sam Lynch went 3-for-3 to pace a nine-hit attack.

The Red Knights got on the scoreboard in their first at bat as Dan Labosky single, stole second and advanced to third on Lynch’s single. Keaton Studsrud then grounded out to the right side to allow Labosky to score the game’s first run.

Cron struggled with his control early in the game. The first five Hornet baserunners all reached base via walks, including three in the second inning when the Red Knight junior worked out of a bases-loaded jam.

The leadoff walk Cron issued Will Vanderbilt to lead off the third inning began a two-run frame for the Hornets, which allowed them to take the lead.

Vanderbilt fouled off three pitches before getting the free pass and he then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Hopfner followed with a single to put runners on the corners and Mark Handberg doubled down the right field line. When the ball stopped a water puddle, BSM right fielder Marshall Hoemke was forced to chase the ball further up the line and Hopfner managed to score from first.

Hopfner would advanced to third on a ground out but Cron worked out of the inning to keep the Red Knights within a run.

After holding BSM to a run one five hits through four innings, the Red Knights reached Edina starter Mitch Larson for two runs and four hits in the fifth inning.

Nathan Hanks led off the inning with a single to left and stole second base. One out later, Lynch singled to left field and Hanks scored when Studsrud reached on a fielder’s choice. He then stole second base and scored on Michael Kaminski’s base hit to put the Red Knights back on top, 3-2.

A pair of base hits in the sixth inning put runners on the corner for the Hornets and, with two out, leadoff hitter Stephen Kalina drew a walk but BSM catcher Peter Watkins alertly fired the ball to third base to pick off Coleman Foley and end the threat.

Cron was pulled after a 107-pitch outing and Labosky, an Edina native, took over on the mound with the Hornets’ 2-3-4 hitters coming to the plate.

He began the top of the seventh by giving up a single to Vanderbilt but got Hopfner on a ground ball back to the mound, retired Handberg on a lineout to second and finished his second career save by getting Michael Grove to strikeout swinging.

Cron picked up the win after allowing four hits and two runs over six innings. He walked six and struck out two before Labosky came on to pick up the save.

Lynch’s three hits led BSM’s offensive while Kaminski added a pair of singles and an RBI. Studsrud, despite not picking up a hit on the day, drove in two of the Red Knights’ three runs in the game.

BSM is slated to play every day, Monday through Saturday, this coming week, beginning with a 2 p.m. doublhead at home versus Chisago Lakes. Game one of the twinbill will count in the North Suburban Conference standings.
