Red Wing makes first tournament appearance since 1977

CLASS 3A STORY LINES

It's been a while

Red Wing survived a scare in the Section 1 championship game to earn its first berth in the state tournament since 1977. The Wingers enter the eight-team tournament with the best record (22-1), losing only once in early May. They are led by All-Metro junior outfielder Ryan Boldt, who was one of two local players to be invited to USA Baseball's National Team Identification Series.

Get 'em while they're hot

Eastview celebrated its first boys' varsity state championship last week when its lacrosse team upset Eden Prairie. Now the baseball team looks to ride the momentum in hope of making it two state titles in one season. An already impressive season earned the Lightning its first baseball state tournament appearance.

Last hurrah

Longtime Eden Prairie coach Mike Halloran will attempt to end a successful coaching career with one more state championship. The retiring veteran coach helped guide the Eagles through a bumpy season to advance to their fourth consecutive state tournament and eighth overall. Halloran's last state title was in 2010.
