MacDonald paces offense with three-hit performance

Gabe MacDonald paced a 12-hit attack with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate and Willie Falk won his second consecutive start to give Benilde-St. Margaret's its seventh consecutive win, an 8-3 victory over Orono.

MacDonald, who also won to reach base in all four of his plate appearances, was a key to the win as the Red Knights scored in each of the four inning in which he reached base.

He singled to lead off the BSM second inning and eventually scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Sam Lynch.

In the third inning, MacDonald came up with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run double to drive in Andrew Murnane and Joe Melles.

The Red Knights broke open the game in the fifth inning, after Orono had closed to within 3-2, MacDonald walked to load the bases after Joe Melles led off the inning with a walk and Jimmy Heck singled. Melles then scored on a wild pitch, Andrew Murnane drove in a run with a pinch-hit single and Bobby Papetti's two-run pinch-hit single made the score 7-3.

MacDonald singled and stole second, one out after Melles had led off the inning with a double, to help set up an RBI ground out by John Backes.

Falk, who made his first career start and earned his first career win Monday, repeared the effort by working 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Mikey McGill got BSM out of a jam in the fifth inning following Sean Geelan's two-run double, which put the tying run in scoring position, and kept the Spartans off the scoreboard until allowing a run and loading the bases in the seventh inning.

Dan Labosky came on and struck out the first two batters he faced and got the third to ground out back to the mound as he earned his first career save.

Besides MacDonald's offensive production, the Red Knights got two hits from Grant Besse and Melles, who walked twice and reached base in three of his four plate appearances, scored three runs.
