Concerns raised about condition of the field, safety of players

Right field is often where baseball coaches stick an untested player in hopes that few dramatic plays will occur.

For right fielders at Ordean Field, that’s where much of the drama could happen.

The baseball field at the new East High School reopened this spring for the first time since May 2009, but Greyhounds coach John Rudolph is concerned that poor upkeep in the interim could harm the short-term health of the infield and could invoke safety concerns for the players.

The most obvious concern is the condition of the field along the right-field line, where clumps of mud and turf pile up within 2 feet of the foul line, holes in the earth are covered by wooden planks and unstable temporary fencing in the outfield foul area pose a potential hazard. Umpires in East’s first home game against Superior last week ruled all foul balls hit in that direction to be dead balls.
