Heck goes the distance in BSM win.

Jimmy Heck scattered seven hits and 13th-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s handed eighth-ranked Edina a 6-4 loss shortly before Saturday’s rains came to Braemar Park.

Heck allowed runners into scoring position in each of the first two innings but, after hitting a batter to lead off the second inning, retired nine consecutive hitters, giving the Red Knights a chance to take a lead.

BSM scored twice in the third inning when Heck reached on an error with one out and Gabe MacDonald was hit by a pitch. Grant Besse followed with an RBI single and Jack McGinn’s groundout brought home the second run.

The Red Knights tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. After two quick outs, McGinn began the rally with a base hit and John Backes followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Andrew Murnane then delivered a two-run pinch-hit single.

Edina cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning but BSM continued to put runs on the scoreboard, adding one in both the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, Labosky led off with a single and stole second base in front of Joe Melles’ base hit. Heck then grounded into a double play on which Labosky scored to make it a 5-2 game.

The Hornets again score twice in their half of the inning, making it a one-run game, but the Red Knights scored an insurance run in the seventh as McGinn led off with a single and moved to second on Robby Sutherland’s sacrifice bunt. With two out, Keaton Studsrud reached on an infield single and McGinn scored when the throw on Studsrud’s ball got away from the first baseman.

Sutherland’s bunt provided a key run for the offense but his defensive effort in the seventh helped saved the game. With one out and a runner on first, Matt Hopfner’s drive to center field which was headed for a game-tying two-run home run before Sutherland hauled it in to preserve the 3-2 win and Heck followed by getting Mark Handberg on a routine ground out to end the game.
