BSM falls one-half game out of conference lead

Benilde-St. Margaret's scored runs in each of the first four innings but three-run outbursts by Totino-Grace in the third and fourth innings led the Eagles to a 9-5 win, dropping the Red Knights a half game out of first place in the North Suburban Conference standings.

BSM scored in the first inning when Jimmy Heck singled with two outs. Pinch runner Andrew Murnane then stole second base and scored and Gabe MacDonald's flare to right-center field which fell in for a base hit.

On the mound, Heck got off to a fast start as he struck out four of the first six batters he faced before Matt Leuty, with two out in the second inning, homered to right field to tie the score.

John Backes got that run back for the Red Knights when he led off the second inning by taking a 2-0 over the fence in left-center field but a three-run third by the Eagles gave the guests a lead they would not relinquish and they followed with a three-run fourth inning.

After getting working through the first six hitters with relative ease, Heck struggled and needed 94 pitches to work four complete innings. Scott Quinby came on in relief and needed just six pitches to work a 1-2-3 fifth inning. After getting touched for a pair of runs in the sixth, he got through the seventh inning in 11 pitches.

Backes also doubled in the game, leading BSM offensively by going 2-for-3. Keaton Studsrud had a two-run double for the Red Knights in the fourth inning.
