Sophomore Kevin Campbell is small in stature. That doesn’t prevent him from swinging a big bat.

Campbell belted his first high school home run, a three-run shot, helping Brandon-Evansville to a 5-0 victory over Lewiston-Altura in the Class 1A quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the Mini Met in Jordan.

“I thought it was just going far,” Campbell said. “I didn’t know it was going out. It was exhilarating.”

The blast was more than enough support for senior pitcher Thomas Bosek. The right-hander threw a two-hit shutout for his eighth victory of the season. Bosek struck out six and walked one while inducing 10 ground ball outs. He yielded both hits in the top of the fourth inning.

“I just wanted to throw strikes because I knew our defense would play great,” Bosek said. “I thought I did a good job keeping their hitters off balance.”

Brandon-Evansville (20-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on senior Kevin Roers’ run-scoring single past the third baseman. Three of their first four hitters reached base, two singles and a walk.

The Chargers put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth inning. Bosek made it 2-0 with an RBI single while Campbell launched his homer to left field two batters later.

“Kevin’s home run was unbelievable,” Bosek said. “It came at key time. I think it broke their moral.”

Both schools were making their state tournament debut.

The Chargers will play defending state champion New Life Academy in the semifinals Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
