New Ulm Cathedral at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s
5 p.m., Monday, April 20

Two of the top teams in Class 1A — and Tomahawk Conference rivals — collide Monday night as No. 3-1A New Ulm Cathedral visits No. 4-1A Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.

It’s been a tough start for Cathedral (1-3), which has lost three straight since opening with a 16-3 victory at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on April 6. Ten days later, that same Mustangs team defeated the Greyhounds 4-3 to continue the skid. Senior ace Collin Helget started both games against Buffalo Lake-Hector, splitting the pair.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (4-0) has been hot, winning all four of its games entering the final full week of April and scoring double digits in each one. In fact, the Knights have outscored their opponents by a combined 64-5 in those four games, with seven players hitting better than .400. Jared Beltz (.636 with seven RBI), Brandon Helget (.571 with eight RBI) and David Surprenant (.500 with seven RBI) have led the offensive charge, with Surprenant also throwing a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts against Wabasso on April 11.
