Sophomore outside hitter Jasmyn Martin had 11 kills, leading second-seeded Hopkins past seventh-seeded Orono 25-17, 25-21, 25-11 in a Class 3A, Section 6 quarterfinal match Thursday at Hopkins High School.

Sophomore outside hitter Greta Werner added nine kills for the Royals (17-6), ranked No. 5 in the final Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class 3A poll.

Led by Martin’s explosive spikes, Hopkins showcased its offensive firepower in taking down the Spartans (16-8).

“We knew Orono was a good team because we played them during the regular season,” Martin said. “We just focused on our passing, being decisive and getting it done right away.

With the win, Hopkins not only eliminated Orono from the section tournament but also bounced back from a three-set loss to section foe Wayzata in the regular-season finale.

“We were hungry for (this game),” Martin said. “We were pumped up for this game.”

The Royals faces the winner of the match between Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Wayzata in the section semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School.
