Tucker Skoblik wanted a pitch he could get out of the infield. He didn’t get one.

The junior instead patiently took a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving New York Mills a 6-5 victory over Chatfield  in the Class 1A semifinals at Chaska Athletic Park. It was the Eagles’ second victory in as many days in their final at-bat.

“This has been crazy,” Skoblik said. “It’s going to be an hour before I calm down. We have a lot of fight in us.”

The Eagles advance to the championship game for the second time in school history. They were the state tournament runner-up in 2004.

Junior left fielder AJ Wegscheid, a .240 hitter who bats ninth for New York Mills (25-0), ignited its offense in the first three innings He had key hits in his first two at-bats, including a bases-loaded triple in the Eagles’ four-run third inning

Wegscheid’s bases-clearing triple came after Skoblik delivered a run-scoring single with two outs earlier in the inning. An error loaded the bases for Wegscheid, who wasted little time making it 5-0.

“AJ has had his ups and downs this year,” Skoblik said. “He had one heck of a game. He came through today for us.”

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, stringing together three consecutive singles. Lead-off hitter junior Nick Kupfer delivered the run-scoring hit. Wegscheid had the second hit of the inning.

Chatfield wasn’t going to go quietly. It scored an unearned run in the fourth and four times in the fifth, tying it at five-all. Seniors Zach Eggers and  Jake Neis and junior TJ Moechnig all had run-scoring hits in the fifth.
